Boyz n the hood

BOYZ N THE HOOD:

C: The costumes in this video characterize the actors, it is a way of expressing themselves as they choose what they wear to school. There is a contrast between the two main boys, as one is wearing a tracksuit and a hat - who also speaks rudely and is extremely cocky - and the other is wearing a shirt beneath a jumper - who seems polite and understanding. The two girls in the back dress and seem roughly similar, so there is no dramatic contrast there. The teacher dresses stereo typically - smartly and presentable. In addition the mother also wears a smart purple dress, this juxtaposes to what the teacher thinks, as she boldly asks if shes educated.
L: The lighting is rather dark and dimming when referring to the streets; due to representing the harshness of reality in this town. In addition the killings, shootings and racial tension sets a dramatically cold atmosphere. The buildings appear dull and old, with only graffiti splashing a slight of colour onto the walls.
A: The main actors are all black, which shows - through this film - the struggles of their life to the audience. This makes it much more personal and effective. There is a divide between the white and black characters, for example the teacher is not only rude to the child but his mother too, the killing of the white president, and there is a huge amount of disrespect. More importantly, despite there only being 6 characters, this film represents all the other black Americans -   "one out of every twenty-one black Americans will be murdered in their lifetime."
M: n/a
P: Despite not seeing any physical gun in action or in sight, the importance of the weapon is extremely serious - the whole clip is based on the shootings.
One of the main boys uses a map to explain their attribute to Africa, identifying where they came from, however the other main boy disagreed - its almost like he was ashamed...

M: Music doesn't seem to appear within this clip, however many sound effects are added to create suspense and build the tension. Moreover it captivates the attention of the audience, focusing them on the main features. Especially in the beginning when a helicopter noise fades in the background and suddenly a sharp bang appears whilst a quick transition of a 'stop' sign shows. This abrupt moment gives a sense of realization or instructions - things need to stop. Additionally, another sign appears 'one way'; the sound of a chime acts as another sound effect in the background. This contrasts to the usual violent sounds that have been applied before. This also sounds like a type of discovery or solution.
C: The sound effects are parallel to this certain video.
D: There is many diegetic sounds, such as the dogs barking, the ruffle of the rubbish, the weather, beeping cars and the actors' voices. However there is also non diegetic sounds, for example whilst the camera focuses on a close up of the president - each shot getting closer and closer to his face -  a 'bang' effect performs each time. Not only emphasising the multiple times he got shot but the reality of the dangerous aspects happening in the street where the kids live.
O: At the beginning (whilst advertising the industry) there is many off screen voices, which are mostly in a violent and aggressive tone, such as the screaming and shouting. Additionally the screeching police sirens, firing bullets and the echoed police radio sets the scene to the audience, they immediately understand that the theme of violence and anger will occur. Moreover a child cries " they shot my friend, they shot my brother". This voice imagery generates sympathy and sorrow - why should a child have to go through this?  During the off screen voices, two facts appear on screen: "one out of every twenty-one black Americans will be murdered in their lifetime" and "most will die at the hands of another black male." Moreover, when the clip displays the several drawings (sketched by a child) a woman speaks off screen, who - too - mentions death and killings.
V: There isn't any voice overs within this clip.
E: Despite there not being any physical music during this video, the off screen noises and sound effects create emotion for itself. The sense of fear and trouble is constantly emphasised and the theme of killings and shootings create an emotion of  uncertainty
D: The dialogue between the actors appear to be very slang and expressive. For example one of the main characters stuck his middle finger up at the president, this body language creates a sense of racial tension and violence. Moreover, the swearing and fighting that happens in class also portrays this certain expressiveness; the kids also seem out of control. Moments after, the teacher rings the boy's mother, asking rude and discourteous questions. This dialogue is important due to the racial tension and the attribute of unfairness. These could be all the issues that needs to be resolved.

S: The screen time is quite quick, viewing roughly 8 hours in 5 minutes.
T: There are alternating transitions, some sudden - for example in the beginning of the video, the scene aggressively and unexpectedly changes to the 'stop' sign - and some smooth - such as the soft and blended shifts to show the diverse drawings. Furthermore this constructs an awareness of empathy towards the children, as normal young kids would possibly draw family pictures or animals etc, where as these specific children draw dead bodies, police cars and helicopters; due to that being a part of their daily life.
O: The day is in order, as it displays the children's day at school, from morning to evening.
P: The pace is quite steady - not too quick but not too slow.
S: There isn't any special effects in this video except from sound, which i have previously mentioned.

Sound/Edit

Sound:

M - music
C - contrapuntal/ parallel
D - diegetic/ non diegetic
O - off screen
V - voiceover
E - emotion
D - dialogue

Editing:

S - screen time
T- transitions
O - order of narrative
P - pace
S - special effects

Practice ( UP scene) :

M: the music tells a beautiful story without words needed, it creates love and passion through the soft violins and happy melody. Resulting in a romantic atmosphere and genre.
C: the music is parallel to the setting; the upbeat and cheerful tune relates to an adoring and blissful emotion, and the slow and saddening music relates to a desolate feeling. This is purposely used so the audience feels the way the characters feel.
D: there is non diegetic music in this scene, the music states the emotion and words for itself.
O: there is no offscreen voices or actors in this scene.
V: there is also no voice overs.
E: the music creates two controversial emotions - happiness and sadness. these contrasting emotions allows the audience to connect with the characters and permits the journey of their life to come together; every couple has their ups and downs.
D: there is no dialogue within the characters.

S: roughly 40/50 years have passed within a 4 minute clip, therefore the screen time is very short and quick.
T: 1 minute and 21 seconds into the clip there is a very delicate and important scene. The couple seems to be preparing for a baby as Ellie is painting a child's room in luminous and complementary colours, representing happiness. The music is upbeat and cheerful, however a few seconds later a simple and smooth transition appears - with not only a different scene but a change in the tone of music; slowing down. A grey and dull atmosphere lingers whilst the couple crouch in despair, knowing they are unable to have a child. This creates a great deal of sadness and emptiness.
O: this clip is in order as it shows their lives pass through the years, from the past to the present.
P: The pace is extremely quick; due to passing 50 years within a 4 minute clip, however it has a smooth and gentle approach.
S: there is no special effects within this movie; due to it being a cartoon. The clip is extremely natural and pure.

Ghost Ship

 Camera
 Sound (music, script, effects)
  • the opening shot is a long shot  with the ship placed in the centre. The producer uses intertextuality here as references towards the titanic is shown.
  • introduced by light, slow and swirling camera shots and angles.
  • Repetition of the birds eye angle is used for effect, displaying the two contrasting scenes - the opening was romantic and full of light whereas the other was covered in blood and horrific symbols.
  • towards the end, the constant slash shots juxtaposes with the soft and lenient camera movements at the start. The speed also speeds up, foreshadowing that it is about to spiral out of control.
  • Director 'chops' people by using mid shots, this also shows a sense of foreshadowing.

  • opening scene portrays passionate and upbeat music - soft violins and soothing rhythms are played in the foreground - which gives an impression of a romantic film.
  • As the film continues the music gets quiet and fades into the background, focusing on the wire. A sinister appeal is then used and the sounds of machinery is ominous.
  • a myriad of sound effects are implied to create dramatic effect, especially a confusing aspect.
  • Whilst and after the gory part takes place, everything is silent and still and the music suddenly stops - a sense of realisation.

Mise En Scene (lighting, setting, props, costume)
 Editing (cuts,transitions,       speed)
  •  pink swirly font is the audiences expectations on a romantic genre.
  • starts with a dark setting; camera appears out of a dark mysterious sea and the sky is black. This foreshadows the darkness that is about to come.
  • main singer is dressed in silky red. the colour red has two juxtaposing meanings; danger and love.
  • The man dressed in blue stands out from all the other staff (who are dressed in white, symbolising innocents and kindness) and he has a sinister appearance, indicating that he is a bad character. A few moments later he stands next to a limbless statue - the producer purposely uses irony here to show the possibilities of whats to come.
  • the wire stands above the flowers, signifying that life is about to end, as flowers embody the pureness of life.
  • The small main girl is always surrounded by the staff dressed in white - a protection?
  • during the sinister scene, a moonlit blue filter is applied to make the setting cold and dark.

  • mixture of speeds and cuts, which change from soft and slow from sudden and jolted. Theres a constant 'back and forth' approach to build suspense and confusion.

Semiotics:

The girl’s portrayal in the centre of the poster highlights a sense of power – physically and mentally – as her hand strongly hovers over the three boys at the front. Also her dominant facial expression represents anger and control whereas the other characters appear scared and fearful. This contrasts to the typical stereotype of a younger girl; due to normally being viewed as weak and vulnerable. The audience is left to question whether the girl is evil or protecting those around her. In addition, she is the biggest feature in the poster, which connotes her importance within the series but also accentuates that the storyline is built around her.

In this poster the women have not been sexualised -
excluding the stereotypical aspect of women being weak;
due to them working with the men and are shown holding weapons.

The background has a slight division between themes: the luminous starry night
on the right side indicates a sci-fi and horror genre (creating a sense of darkness and uncertainty) although the left side denotes a romantic genre (due to being filled with dreamy lights, coloured in pure pinks and reds, daring yellows and oranges.) As a result, the setting and mood is created, enlightening the viewer an insight of the series.
            ⇖
Despite there being a lot of darkness within this poster,
there is also a myriad of light. This juxtaposing aspect could
mean that when there is darkness – fear for example –
the characters put light on the subject – they try to prevent, help,
destroy or investigate the darkness. This connotes that
the characters are courageous, brave and intellectual.

A sheriff is placed within the group of characters; therefore despite the awareness of fear, there is a sense of security. This connotes that - possibly – murders, deaths, thefts, pain etc will be included within the series, creating a horrific appeal. However the advantage of a strong masculine character constructs a safe contrast. This is a typical representation of manhood within media in this period.

The three boys located in the centre of the poster, directly above the daring title, highlight their importance within the series. Additionally, the significance of the number three is referenced in many ways: it is a sacred number in many religions (e.g. the father, the son, the holy spirit), past present future, birth life death,
and beginning middle end. This possibly connotes their power when together. Also, the use of bikes could suggest that this series is adventurous and due to them being in the dark alone displays their courage and bravery.
                                                             ⇘

There is an ominous looking figure lurking in the background that seems to have come out of a restricted area wired and barbed fences. This causes a huge division between the other characters (who appear boldly in the centre) as the feature is positioned separately and has no identity.
Due to the suspicious suit, the genre changes to a type of sci-fi program as it connotes space,
or could be used for protection – a lab coat - which scientists use.
                    ⇙
The title has a very retro and unique vibe to it, highlighting a neon appeal,
which would be seen regularly in the 80’s. Furthermore, the specific
font is inspired from Stephan King horror films, which were also produced
in this time period. This could suggest when the series takes place.
Moreover, the denotation of the colour red connotes a type
of danger and fear but also signifies a sense of love and passion.
